Day 3: Ben Paterson

Today we went to the island of Heimaey on the ferry which took 30 minutes. We saw many smaller islands on the way to Heimaey but it is the only populated one of the 15 islands. The island has a volcano which erupted in 1973 and we went to see the crater. We were able to see from the crater the effect that the lava had on the island, and were able to see where the people of the town had cooled the lava with water from the sea to prevent it from closing the entrance to the harbour. There were houses that had been covered in the 1973 eruption and the lava had cooled trapping them and making around 400 people homeless.
